Welcome to Brill Windmill

Brill Windmill is a Grade II* listed post mill with 17th century origins on the edge of a hill-top village on the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire border. Surrounded by open common land, adjacent to a lively village and with far-reaching views, the windmill is an iconic landmark loved by locals and visitors alike. Owned by Brill Parish Council and managed by The Brill Society, the windmill is usually open to the public Sunday afternoons Easter to September - but, even when we're not open, there's still wonderful views, Brill Common and village to explore, beautiful walks through nearby fields and woods - and two excellent pubs for refreshment.

The aim of this website is to give a taste of what makes Brill Windmill so special. Browse
our gallery of photographs, many taken by visitors over the years, and then, to get a feel for the human history of the windmill, read The Miller's Tale. The Windmill Blog offers a more personal view whilst our FAQs focus on practical topics; if your question isn't answered there, please ask! If you want to know more about Brill and windmill technicalities, take a look at the our Shop. Finally, for more images of Brill Windmill (we just can't get enough of those sunsets!) and to keep up-to-date with happenings, follow us on Instagram or keep an eye on our Facebook page.

And now ... we need your help

Late in October 2021, Brill Windmill was badly damaged by high winds. Our millwright quoted £10,000 for a new sail and we started fundraising. In the months that followed, we were thrilled and humbled by the response. Although there were several large donations, most gifts were relatively modest; heart-felt amounts from people who live nearby, visit Brill regularly, have their own happy childhood memories, or share the memories of parents and grandparents.

With the help of all these wonderful people, we were well on the way to reaching our target when disaster struck anew: rampant rot in the opposite sail. This meant that we had to raise a further £10,000 and, unsurprisingly given all that's going on in the world today, it's been hard work. We therefore made the difficult decision in October 2022 to draw on our reserves in order to get the sails replaced before the onset of winter wind and rain. This means that our fund-raising must continue apace - so, please, if you love Brill Windmill - or just windmills in general - do consider donating to Brill Sailers, the Brill Windmill Repair Fund to help us build financial resilience for the future. (We have a major fundraising event planned for April 2023; find out more on this page on the Brill Parish Council website.)

To donate online, click the DONATE button below to be taken to our Just Giving campaign. Alternatively, if would prefer to do a bank transfer or give cash or a cheque, please email us or use the contact form at the foot of the page to find out how to do this. Thank you so much.
